Annotation. The article presents an innovative approach to teaching monologue speech and developing lexical and grammatical skills in English language classes through the use of multimedia content based on the work of the contemporary artist Taylor Swift. The author argues that the singer's discography, interviews, and documentaries constitute a high-quality pedagogical resource that significantly enhances student motivation and engagement.
The article analyzes the linguistic features of song lyrics, including the use of metaphors, idioms, alliteration, and literary allusions, as well as the potential of public speaking events for mastering rhetorical devices and public speaking skills.
The central element of the research is the workbook "Enchanted by English", created by the author. The workbook is structured into thematic sections, each targeting the development of specific language competencies (speaking, listening, vocabulary).
This work will be of benefit to English teachers and learners of English. The research was carried out in collaboration with Karina Shagibalova, a 9th-grade student from Gymnasium No. 9, Krasnokamensk.

For years, we’ve been told that learning English is a labyrinth, a maze of grammar rules and awkward textbooks, which felt like a "Cold As You" — static, dry, and disconnected from reality. But what if I told you none of it was necessary and that the most sophisticated English teacher of the 21st century is not a professor, but a 14-time Grammy winner? What if the most effective mentor was a global storyteller who turns vocabulary into enchanted poetry and grammar into invisible string? Welcome to English (Taylor’s Version)! We are arguing that Taylor Swift’s discography, interviews, and documentaries are not only an entertainment, but are a high-quality, pedagogical powerhouse for mastering English language.
First of all, to make the experience more memorable and profound, let’s dive into Swiftie atmosphere. Now that you’re probably more interested, let me introduce her from my “well up” perspective. Taylor’s music is unlike any other. Every listener of her music can identify themselves within her lyrics, all in completely individual ways, finding in them something so deeply personal. Taylor offers a variety of learning methods, which are totally entertaining, so this inspiration by art lets you overcome the language barrier.
Consequently, the aim of the study is to explore the impact of Taylor Swift's music on English language learning and determine how it influences student motivation and engagement. One of the main tasks for achieving our aim is to analyze the linguistic features of Taylor’s art and to create our own workbook and video analysis.
Main sources are Taylor’s discography and social media. Why study "Folklore" from a dictionary when you can live it? Taylor Swift is a self-proclaimed English-teacher. Her lyrics range from the high-school simplicity of “Fearless” to the sesquipedalian complexity of “evermore” and “The Tortured Poets Department”. It’s perfect style of learning. You’re not memorizing; you’re collecting moments, one lyric at a time. By analyzing songs like Champagne Problems or The Lakes, learners aren't just memorizing words; they are learning metaphors, alliteration, and storytelling. When you sing, "I’ve never been a natural, all I do is trying" you are not only practicing the present perfect, but are connecting emotionally with the syntax. This emotional resonance is mostly revealed in Taylor’s song “You’re on your own, kid”. In addition, it packs a punch with useful vocabulary, offering learners a diverse range of nouns, adjectives, verbs, and collocations.
Do you know Taylor’s also woven a subtle tapestry of literary references throughout her discography? Some of them are Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet”, and Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”. These references add some magic and fabulousness to learning process. But to truly speak English with "Style," one must look beyond the lyrics. Taylor’s interviews offer a bunch of benefits. Students are getting used to natural, conversational English, expanding their vocabulary due to topics diversity, emotionally connecting with expressions, exploring cultural aspects.
Now we’re appealing to her New York University Commencement Speech of 2022, which is a goldmine for advanced learners. It’s a masterclass in rhetorical devices, humor, and public speaking. Learners absorb how to structure an argument, how to tell a personal story, and how to land a punchline in English.
Taylor is also famous for coming up with life-learning quotes. Some of them you’ve already heard in her NYU speech. The other ones are presented here.
Now I’d like you to meet our product – “Enchanted by English”. It’s a compilation of entertaining tasks, which are based on Taylor Swift’s work. Making our workbook is the consequence of the survey that we conducted. Students overwhelmingly enjoy activities tied to Taylor Swift's music. We noticed significant improvements in vocabulary, grammar, and cultural understanding. The workbook is structured around 5 sections, each title of which connects creatively to Taylor Swift's work, Each chapter targets specific language skills. First section Two Truths and a Lie is designed with friendship bracelets and helps students distinguish facts from fiction related to Taylor Swift's life and career, enhancing their analytical skills. In the second Section -All's Fair in Love and Poetry students analyze lyrics and music videos. Section 3: Speak Now (Taylor's Version) focuses on speaking and listening skills. Section 4: Home Is Where the Heart Is, But, God, I Love the English consists of Taylor’s quotes and words of wisdom. Final section-Mastermind Glossary supports vocabulary acquisition, clarifying difficult words and expressions found in Swift's songs from 2nd section. Some of pages are here.
Additionally, we made a booklet with fun and effective language tips and key techniques for learning English through Taylor Swift.
We recorded an audio of students with facts about her, which is used in our workbook and booklet.
Like Taylor said herself, “People like to talk about phenomenons”. And one of those that created the biggest legacy for all the next generations is Taylor Swift The Eras Tour, which became the most grossing tour in history. 2 months ago, Taylor released her “The End of an Era” docuseries, which is dedicated to the process of creating The Eras Tour. Documentaries provide high-level listening comprehension challenges, featuring various dialects, fast-paced industry jargon, and raw and natural narration.
And how we emphasized earlier, language is nothing without culture. Through the "The End of an Era" learners gain "Long Story Short" access to the evolution of English idioms and cultural aspects. So, we decided to make our own video analysis of this Taylor’s work to explore the diversity of her idiom usage. Making this video, we realized that there’s a difference between knowing language and feeling its rhythm.
Speaking of patterns and tempo, we declare that the ability to enunciate words is the main factor of fluency. Taylor is giving the opportunity to practice this as well. She has a lot of tongue-twisters in her songs, which helps students learn the ways of word-connection without being bored and exhausted. Here are some of these tongue-twisters.
In conclusion, we can say that Taylor’s Version method is successful because it tricks you into learning. It’s effortless. We learn English not by force, but by inspiration.
We argue it’s the anti-hero to outdated methods. It proves that you can learn a language by living in its stories, by feeling its bridges burn, and by celebrating the simple joy of finding the right words at the right time.
In the "Great War" against language barriers, English (Taylor’s Version) is the ultimate weapon. This method is successful because it replaces "Bad Blood" with textbooks for a "Love Story" with lyrics. It’s effective, it’s modern, and it’s "Fearless".
Traditional methods might tell you to "Shake It Off" when you make a mistake, but our project proves that by following Taylor’s lead, you learn that every mistake is just a "New Year’s Day"—a chance to start again with a better vocabulary and a stronger voice.
So, join the movement. Learn English. Make it Taylor’s Version. Because the era of boring lessons is officially "Over Now."
